Starting in mid-2023, most supermarket buyers will have to pay 5 cents or more

Singapore - As of mid-2023, shoppers in most supermarkets will have to pay at least 5 cents per disposable shopping bag.

Two-thirds of Singapore's supermarkets - including NTUC FairPrice, Cold Storage, Giant, Sheng Siong and Prime - will charge all disposable bag materials (including plastic and paper).

On Monday, Congress presented several proposals to amend the Resource Sustainability Act, including the upcoming baggage tariffs. The proposed reform aims to reduce packaging and food waste in Singapore. In 2021 Singapore recycled only 6% of plastic waste.

The carrier's baggage tariffs were announced for the first time in early 2022.
