South Australia to Enforce New Single-Use Plastic Bans Starting September 1st

14-08-2024

South Australia is set to roll out the next phase of its single-use plastic ban, with new regulations taking effect on September 1st. This initiative, part of the state's broader efforts to tackle environmental pollution, will see a wide range of plastic items banned, including plastic barrier bags, thicker plastic bags, food and beverage containers, expanded polystyrene (EPS) products, and even plastic confetti and balloon accessories.

Announced in November 2022, these measures target single-use plastics that contribute significantly to pollution, especially in marine environments. Projections have shown that if current practices continue, the amount of plastic entering the oceans each year could nearly triple by 2040, reaching 29 million metric tonnes. This would result in approximately 50 kilograms of plastic per metre of coastline worldwide, a scenario that has raised alarms among environmental advocates.

The new legislation does allow for certain exceptions, particularly for certified compostable bioplastic containers, which are approved for disposal in the region's green bins. The waste collected is converted into compost, benefiting local agriculture and the wine industry.

South Australia has long been a pioneer in environmental protection, being the first Australian state to implement such comprehensive bans on single-use plastics. This leadership has inspired similar initiatives across the country, reinforcing the state's reputation as a national leader in sustainability.

To support businesses through this transition, the South Australian Government continues to run its Plastic Free SA program, providing free guidance on alternatives and compliance with the new regulations. A dedicated team is available to assist businesses in navigating these changes.
