Biden Administration to Phase Out Single-Use Plastics

06-08-2024

In July, President Joe Biden announced an ambitious plan to eliminate single-use plastic products within the federal government, aiming for a complete phase-out by 2035. This initiative also includes ending the use of single-use plastics in government-related food service operations by 2027.

"President Biden is committed to taking ambitious actions throughout the lifecycle of plastic to end plastic pollution," stated the White House. The administration plans to achieve these goals by adopting reusable, compostable, and highly recyclable alternatives. Measures such as adding water refill stations will also be implemented to reduce plastic bottle use.

Plastic pollution is highlighted as a significant environmental issue with widespread impacts. The White House's 83-page report, "Mobilizing Federal Action on Plastic Pollution: Progress, Principles, and Priorities," outlines the need for unprecedented action across the entire plastic lifecycle. This includes reducing pollution from petrochemical production, enhancing recycling and reuse infrastructure, and investing in innovative materials to replace plastics.

Environmental groups have praised the Biden administration's efforts. Erin Simon, Vice President and Head of Plastic Waste and Business at the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), emphasized the U.S. federal government's role in reducing plastic use, stating, "If we can make change happen at scale, so can you." Oceana, a nonprofit focused on ocean health, also lauded the initiative as a significant step towards reducing plastic pollution and promoting reusable products.

A recent survey by Oceana found that 75% of over 1,000 registered U.S. voters supported national policies to reduce single-use plastic, with 84% favoring increased use of reusable food packaging and cutlery. This widespread support indicates a promising path forward for the Biden administration's environmental agenda.
