Why Plastic Ban Ordinances?
Banning plastic waste is a necessary step towards reducing plastic waste. For example, 23 percent of US landfill waste is plastic containers and cutlery. Plastic waste is also finding its way into our oceans, beaches and roads, especially as the number of takeaway containers has increased by almost 300% since the pandemic.
Plus, it turns out the plastic ban works! Research has shown a 70 percent reduction in the use of plastic bags in California, leading to further reductions in the use of straws, cutlery, containers and bottles. Since the US produces the most plastic in the world, we should take steps to stop the use of single-use plastics.
While the ordinance only applies to certain areas of Los Angeles, it's still an important step to encourage the rest of the country to adopt major changes. Turning the tide on the ocean of plastic waste is increasingly important for people and the world itself. Best of all, Los Angeles is one of the other cities and states to take steps to ban plastic bags, plastic straws, and Styrofoam products!
