Plastic Prohibition Act 2022: What restaurants need to know about their (prohibited) use of plastics
In April 2021, the Los Angeles City Council approved a law that came into force last November to ban the use of plastic in all restaurants and bars unless required by customers. The ban aims to reduce the pollution and waste of disposable plastic products as restaurants switch to environmentally friendly reusable materials.
The law prohibits:
• Foam polystyrene products such as foamed plastic cups, plates and coolers
• Disposable plastic items such as straws, containers, plates, bowls, dishes, trays and utensils
What does that mean? All restaurants no longer use disposable plastic containers that customers can eat or take with them unless required. Any restaurant or bar that violates the ban may receive a fine of 100 dollar per day up to 1000 dollar per year.
