Canada with plastic restriction order
As of today, Canada prohibits the production and import of disposable plastics for sale, thus taking a big step towards zero plastic waste up to 2030!
Already in June 20th of this year, the Trudeau government announced that it would ban and import disposable plastics from the end of the year, giving domestic companies enough time to transition and consume existing stocks.
Disposable plastic products, including shopping bags, dishes, food service dishes, ring holders, mixing rods and straws, are completely prohibited! In addition, the import ban for ring clamps comes into force in June 2023!
Statistics from the Federal Environment Ministry show that Canadians dispose of at least three million tonnes of plastic waste every year, of which only 9% can be recycled.
Juan Jos é Alava, a research associate at UBC University's Marine Pollution Research Center, said the one-time plastic ban was an "important step" that could eliminate 1.3 million tons of plastic waste that is difficult to recycle each year, which amounts to more than one million complete garbage bags.
He said Canada must ban single-use plastics to achieve the goal of zero plastic waste. "We still have a lot of work to do to combat plastic pollution.
Note that today's ban does not prohibit plastic bags used for the disposal of organic waste, waste and recycled items;
Plastic bags for packaging bulk goods such as fruit and vegetables, sweets, cereals and nuts, meat, flowers or potted plants, clothing and baked goods are also allowed
People need reusable plastic tableware that is not made of polystyrene or polyethylene and can be washed in the dishwasher a hundred times.
At the same time, the use of food containers and cups made entirely or partially of plastic, containers and cups with expanded polystyrene foam, extruded polystyrene foam, PVC and black plastic or oxygen-degradable plastic produced by partial or incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons is prohibited.
Plastic trays for the storage of raw meat, fish and vegetables packaged in plastic film, as well as pre-cooked food packaged in flexible plastic, are not affected by the prohibition;
containers for long-term storage of peanut butter, applesauce, olives or nuts are not affected;
Note that direct straw is prohibited in Canada this time, and the disposable flexible straw may be produced and imported until June 20, 2024.
In addition, Canadians can provide disposable plastic straws for others in family or society; Medical and nursing facilities can provide patients with plastic straws.
Starting in June 2023, Canada prohibits the manufacture and import of disposable plastic ring frames made of low density polyethylene, commonly used to enclose and lift beverage containers in supermarkets.
One year after the entry into force in June, the sale of this type of ring frame was also completely prohibited.
Today's ban is also a big step towards environmental protection in Canada. Politics has come out, but implementation depends on everyone making changes in their daily lives.
